Topic “Knoxville mayor's race”

By News Sentinel Editorial Board

Madeline Rogero won an overwhelming victory Tuesday and will become Knoxville's first female mayor when she takes the oath of office in January.

By defeating businessman Mark Padgett by 18 percentage points, the former Knox County commissioner and director of the city's community development department can claim a mandate from the voters.

Madeline Rogero came close to winning outright the Knoxville mayoral race in Tuesday's primary.

But there are 29 provisional ballots yet to be added—a number that doesn't appear to be enough to push her over the edge.

So in the likely Nov. 8 runoff with political newcomer Mark Padgett, Rogero will have to continue building her base of widespread support throughout the city and try not to stumble on any issues.
